Emma-Ching’s Blog, ‘Costa Rica is Growing on Me’

Today was a wonderful day in which we viewed many of the crops and species preserved, grown, produced, and cultured by Costa Rica, such as the pineapple crops, the coffee bean crops, and the banana crops. This was very essential for me as a undergrad bio major because I am always trying to differentiate plant species by the look of the plant. I was amazed to discover the banana plantation at EARTH University provides bananas for Whole Food Market! Having first eye experience in the machinery and techniques utilized to sustain somewhat of a near organic farm was quite fascinating because it is just something I’ve never seen. There are many jobs within the production: from growing the banana trees for nine months and making sure they are not infected by diseases, to picking only the correct sized bunches of bananas and that they are green and fresh looking for business sales in stores.

What I mean by my title though, is that as time goes on, as I take more photographs, hear the stories and opinions of students and faculty members so dedicated to keep Costa Rica #1 in Renewable Energy Developing Country! Every hotel and room that we stay in offers culture and perspectives that I can literally feel changing my opinion on the countries that are not as “fortunate” as America. Costa Rica is beautiful to me. Amazes me. Has an aura to it I can only feel in genuine lands where the food is grown by the people who care, know and enjoy the difficulties of having such a green and eco-friendly country.
